What does Godmanchester have to offer?

Godmanchester is a superb town situated in the Huntingdonshire district of Cambridgeshire. It really has the best of both worlds, a town with the community feel of a village. Listed in the 1086 Domesday book as  97 households, the current population is an estimated 6,700. The impressive Chinese bridge as seen in the above image has been a well-known landmark of Godmanchester since its original design and construction by James Gallier  in 1827

 

Services 

Godmanchester has many shops and amenities. With two Co-ops, a One-Stop, a fish & chip shop, some lovely cafes such as; The Grand Piano Cafe and Pinnies Tea Room offering afternoon teas, delicious cakes, and food. Chinese and Indian restaurants such as Planet Spice offering Indian cuisine with the option to dine in or takeaway. Cinta is a Chinese/Malaysian restaurant also offering takeaway. Bellmans bakery/sandwich shop has been open since 1996, they serve delicious homemade sandwiches, cakes, and bakes. There are lots of options on your doorstep.

The Exhibition is a family-owned welcoming pub/restaurant with a spacious garden for those glorious summer days and an indoor open fire for the colder winter months.  They also often have visits from VANPIZZA, a converted van serving rustic pizzas. The White Hart is a charming 15th-century bar and restaurant serving traditional pub food and has a great garden area for the summer. The Royal Oak is another traditional pub option in the area.

 

There are some lovely spots in the town to check out. Godmanchester Riverside is a lovely area for a walk all year round offering surfaced and unsurfaced paths, play parks for children, and a lock, if you are lucky, you will also find the famous ferry boat with Captain Tim who will take you to Brampton and back along the scenic river banks: check out our ferry boat video here. Portholme is the largest wild meadow in England which can be accessed from the lock liking Godmanchester to Brampton and Huntingdon. Godmanchester Nature Reserve is a vast site of 59 hectares offering a mixture of grasslands, 4 lakes that were former gravel pits, reedbed, and willows.

 

Godmanchester Community Association hosts yearly bonfire night celebrations and ‘picnic in the park’ events.

Island Hall is an elegant Georgian-style mansion built in the 18th century. Featured in ‘England’s best houses’ this is definitely worth a visit. The family's seventh-generation provides tours of the exquisite house and beautiful three acres of gardens. Visitors can enjoy lunches, afternoon tea, dinners, and private concerts. This superb venue is available for hire for a private function and weddings.

 

Schools & GP

There are a number of schools in the area, 3 primary schools within the town; St. Anne's CofE primary school, Godmanchester Community Academy, and Godmanchester bridge academy also providing pre-school. Clarence House and Ducklings childcare offer pre-school and day nurseries. The town has a doctor's surgery, dentist and chemist. Godmanchester is home to St.Mary the Virgin Church and Godmanchester Baptist Church.

 

Transport

Godmanchester has excellent transport links, with the nearby Huntingdon station providing direct access to Peterborough and London Kings Cross. Local bus routes such as the guided busway provide access to Cambridge. The town has easy access to the A14 & A1 making this a well-connected town.
